Lions Lacrosse Start the 2011 Season
The Lions Lacrosse teams had a quick turnaround start from their tryouts to their first game on March 7th. Coaches King, Crone, Rogers and Tucker had two days of tryouts and 4 practices to prepare for their first game against St. Thomas More Knights. It was a tough first loss 6-12, but this young team got one game under their belt and now can move forward on progressing with each practice and each game.
The Lions’ next game was pretty tough against St. Raphael’s Guardians, but the 3-13 score didn’t reveal the heart the boys put into trying to capitalize on each possession. The Lions showed great effort against the Guardians, winning the most ground balls in the game and had 16 shots on goal. Come back and check out games agaings St. Mary Magadalene Monarchs and Ravenscroft Ravens.

Jayvee Girls are 12-6 With One Game Left To Play
As the OLL junior varsity girls’ basketball season races toward its finale this weekend, the girls set an emphatic tone with back-to-back wins against Immaculata of Durham and zip code rival St. Raphael’s.
The week opened Tuesday afternoon in Krzyzewskiville with a 25-17 knuckle-cracker against Immaculata. The Lady Lions coaches chose to work the bench players in the first two periods, and Lourdes held a slim 10-9 first-half lead. But the Lady Lions roared out in the second half outscoring the Eagles 15-8 to make the final score an eight point victory and the ride home on I-40 a lot more enjoyable.
Two days later, on February 3rd, the Lady Lions were back in the comfy confines of OCGHS gymnasium. Once again, coaches D’Amelio and Zachary wanted to give their improving role players some needed minutes, and they didn’t disappoint. One player scored her first bucket of the season while another scored a pair of field goals for the first time. St. Raphael’s, meanwhile, put up a valiant fight even as their line-up was riddled with six players out with the flu. But the Lourdes’ defense once again proved too scrappy, especially under the boards, and the final score was 24-9 wrapping up a season sweep of the Guardians.
Sometimes a Loss Can Feel Pretty Darn Good
So, what does a team do when it’s playing a much-anticipated rematch against a tall, fast and talented conference foe, and its tri-captain, scoring leader, best ball handler and point guard is injured on the very first possession? If that team is Our Lady of Lourdes Junior Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team, they don’t back down, they don’t quit and, instead, they rise mightily to the occassion. On Saturday, January 28th, in a game one of the officials said was “among the best (he’d) seen in years of officiating at that level,” the Lions left everything they had on the court and threw a scare into mighty St. Michael’s of Cary. After falling behind 16-9 at the half, the Lourdes’ jayvee girls roared out of the locker room outscoring the Angels 11-9 in the third period. The OCGHS gym was rockin’ as a large and vocal crowd that included the OLL J.V. boys cheered on the Lady Lions, and they narrowed the gap to just four points with less than three minutes to play. But despite being rattled by Lourdes’ in-your-face defense, St. Michael’s depth and discipline was just too much to overcome. The final score, 37-30, left every player and coach physically drained, but Coaches D’Amelio and Zachary couldn’t help but find great pride in the loss. The OLL bench contributed with key points and smothering defense, and every player learned they could play with any team in the conference regardless of who’s on the floor.
Jayvee Girls Push Record to 10-5
The Our Lady of Lourdes junior varsity girls’ basketball team was back on the friendly floor of OCGHS Thursday afternoon, January 27th, for a rematch with St. Timothy’s School. In a game that was surprisingly similar to the teams’ first outing in November, the Titans were simply outmatched by an OLL team that was deeper, taller and more experienced. This time, however, the Lady Lions scoring was more balanced across all four periods, and the OLL bench players displayed their growing confidence with smart play, crisp passing and that trademark tenacious defense. The final score, 18-7, included four consecutive free throws–two by St. Timothy’s and two by Lourdes–in the final 14 seconds of play. As the season roars to a finale, the Lions have just three games to play starting with a big rematch versus talented St. Michaels of Cary this Saturday morning at 10:30.
The “More” The Merrier: OLL J.V. Girls Beat St. Thomas More Again
The Lourdes junior varsity girls’ basketball team took their longest road trip of the season for a rematch with St. Thomas More in Chapel Hill on Tuesday, January 25th. The 20-8 final score was most definitely a team effort as six different Lions were in the scoring column including two who sank their first baskets of the season. But once again, “victory” was spelled with a capital “D” as the Lady Lions held the Knights to just two first-half points. The win brought the jayvee girls’ season record to 10-5 with a major conference showdown slated for Saturday versus always-tough St. Timothy’s at OGHS gym.
Girls Varsity Basketball
Girls Varsity Basketball record is 11 wins & 2 losses. We have a big week coming up, playing St. Thomas Moore on Tuesday at Old Cardinal Gibbons and then St. Michaels on Thursday, Jan. 25 at St. Michaels gym. Keep up the good work Lady Lions and we look forward to a winning week!
Hail Mary: Magdalene Wins Again, 22-12
In a game the Lourdes’ junior varsity girls had been looking to for redemption after a bitter December loss, the baskets just wouldn’t fall. On Friday, January 21st, the Lady Lions traveled to Apex for their rematch with the St. Mary Magdalene Monarchs, and once again the OLL smothering defense held a taller and quicker team close in the first half. In fact, a last second layup could have tied the game at 9-9 before the buzzer, but it circled the rim and bounced out. Still, the Lady Lions went to the locker room feeling confident about the chances to stage an upset in Apex. But 13 points from the Monarchs were more than enough to close down the Lions who, despite plenty of good looks at the basket just couldn’t buy a bucket for long stretches of the second half. Coach Zachary, again coaching solo in the absence of head coach Michael D’Amelio, told her team she couldn’t have been more proud of their heart and grit, but it was little consolation to a pride of Lions hungry to beat a blue-chip conference foe. The game was intensely physical, and four of the five Lions starters played the entire contest hoping to gut out a victory. They’ll need every bit of the next four days to recover and regroup for the Jnauary 25th rematch with St. Thomas More in Chapel Hill.
Lady Lions Jayvees Sweep Ravens on 30-15 Victory
Watching the Ravenscroft junior varsity girls’ basketball team enter the OCGHS gym was a sight to behold. Two of the Lady Ravens hopped off their green-and-white custom bus and ran to the ladies room only to emerge seconds later screaming, “I’m not going in THERE!” And so it often goes for teams who visit “the cave” for the very first time. What they don’t understand is that rustic old gym is part of the Lions’ home-court advantage, and it worked its magic on Wednesday afternoon, January 19th. With an injury keeping a key starter on the sidelines, and Coach Michael D’Emelio away on vacation, Assistant Coach Dawn Zachary conceived a game plan designed to keep the Lions and Ravens running for all 24 minutes. With timely substitutions and hard-scrabble contributions off the bench, the jayvee girls pushed to a 10-5 lead before the half. Defense was once again key and the Lions were particularly aggressive off the boards. They then doubled their offensive production in the second half while holding the tired and frustrated Ravens to just ten. The final score, 30-15, demonstrated the Lady Lions are growing depth and versatility off the bench and proved to be an important warm-up for the highly-anticipated rematch with St. Mary Magdalene two days later.
